Description
This workshop will identify and describe three psychological types of school shooters. Each of these types will be presented through case histories of actual perpetrators. The workshop will also discuss domains of failures of school shooters including the life circumstances of the perpetrators, who often endured multiple blows to their identities in terms of failures and rejections.  The workshop will then address warning signs of impending violence, including the concepts of “leakage” and “attack-related behavior.”
A distinction will be made between reactive emergency response procedures and proactive approaches that seek to identify potentially violent attackers before they show up armed and ready to kill. The presentation will be a lecture and small group discussions.  Discussions will involve groups at tables discussing writing samples from students, looking for potential warning signs of violence; this would provide practical application of the concepts. This workshop is intended for any mental health professionals and graduate students.

  3. Explain the terms “threat assessment,” “attack-related behavior” and “leakage.”

About Presenter
Dr. Langman is a psychologist whose research on school shooters has received international recognition, with over 450 media interviews in 27 countries. He has conducted trainings on school safety for Homeland Security, the FBI National Academy in Quantico, and FBI Headquarters, as well as APA, PPA, and organizations and school districts around the country. He is a researcher with Police Foundation and the National Threat Assessment Center of the United States Secret Service. His work has been discussed in congressional testimony on Capitol Hill and his recommendations on school safety were presented to President Obama by the CEO of APA.

Continuing Education Credits
Participants will receive 3 CEs for this program.  In order to receive the CE credits offered for this program, all attendees must be present in the workshop no later than 15 minutes after it begins and must not leave prior to 15 minutes before it ends.  Participants will be asked to complete a program evaluation before receiving a certificate of completion at the end of the program.
